Established 1932
After emigrating from Germany, Frank & Helene Schweizer started Schweizer Nurseries with the holiday season and it grew from there. Over time the nursery flourished to about 3 acres and they nestled it into the terraced hillside of Todt Hill. For 38 years Frank & Helene Schweizer pioneered the gardening industry in Staten Island.
Second Generation
After Conrad received his Horticultural Ph.D. from Michigan State, he and his wife Leona, moved back to Staten Island and took over the family business in 1970. For 10 years Leona was the president of the Bonsai Society & was an active member of the Herb Society for many years. For over 50 years Conrad & Leona have influenced the gardening community of Staten Island.
And Today....
A lot has changed over the last 90 plus years. Since the mid 1990's Conrad (CJ) handles the landscape and design end of the company while his wife Alia can be found amongst the flowers in the nursery. Christine & Adrian, our all girl crew, is always eager to help. Dr. Schweizer continues to be at the forefront with diagnosing plant and pest concerns.
